(RI) courses, faculty give students the opportunity to actively engage in the research process as part of their curriculum\/classwork. <b>Students in RI courses get to tackle real problems, issues, or debates without a known or agreed answer.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 15px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The University of Central Florida defines a Research-Intensive (RI) course as one that provides curriculum-based active engagement in a line of inquiry that is guided by a content expert, adheres to aspects of the academic research or scholarship process, and includes a research deliverable.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 15px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Through RI courses, students gain critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and knowledge of the research process itself within a given discipline. RI courses democratize access to research experience and give students a competitive advantage over their peers through participating in research training, having a research deliverable to build their portfolio, and possibly even presenting in research symposia.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2072\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2072\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Why Seek an RI Designation for Your Course?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2072\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2072\"><p>Having your course designated means that students can find research experiences, you get credit for your pedagogical innovations, and students can earn the Undergraduate Research Certificate. (If your course is not tagged, it will not count towards the certificate.) It is also worth designating your course:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">To document research experiences taking place in the undergraduate classroom (<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">supporting UCF&#8217;s strategic goals for undergraduate research and HIP learning experiences)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">To expand access to undergraduate research and to make it easier for students to find and enroll in research experiences.&nbsp;<\/span>Students can simply search for &#8220;HIP-Research Intensive&#8221; courses in the course catalog.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">To distinguish courses where students engage in \u2018original\u2019 research versus those where they just learn about the research process<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000\">To ensure that research experiences in the classroom are held to a meaningful standard of practice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">To ensure that your students&#8217; hard work is recorded via the &#8220;Research-Intensive&#8221; note on their transcript&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2073\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2073\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Criteria<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2073\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2073\"><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">A variety of courses have been designated as Research-Intensive, across all UCF colleges with undergraduate courses. Instructor Level<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2074\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2074\"><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The HIP Courses Designations (Research Intensive, Service Learning, Global Learning, Integrative Experience) can all be obtained at either the instructor or course level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Instructor-Level Designation<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">A course with an instructor-level designation will be tagged as Research-Intensive only if the instructor who has submitted their course section for designation is teaching the course. If there are multiple faculty teaching this course, only the faculty member with an instructor level designation will have the Research Intensive course attribute attached to their course.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Course-Level Designation<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Departments may submit courses to be designated at the course level. This means that all instructors for the course, whether there is one or multiple instructors, will teach the course in accordance with the Research-Intensive designation requirements.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">All sections of courses with course-level designations have common learning outcomes, final outcomes, and similar assessment practices that meet all required components of the RI Rubric. Additionally, course-level designations require that all sections are taught and graded by a content expert in the field with a terminal degree and\/or permanent faculty appointment. \u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">To earn a course-level designation, courses must be either submitted by the chair or include a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academicsuccess.ucf.edu\/our\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2021\/01\/Course-Level-Research-Intensive-Designation-MOU.docx\">Course-Level Research Intensive Designation MOU<\/a><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #000000\">If there are multiple instructors, but everyone uses the same syllabus, then only that syllabus needs to be submitted. Note that to qualify a course must contain all criteria, though courses may focus primarily on one or two, with secondary focus on the others. <i><b>We advise you contact our@ucf.edu to meet with the Research-Intensive designation lead before submitting, so we know your course is coming.<br \/><\/b><\/i><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Complete the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ucf.kualibuild.com\/app\/builder\/#\/app\/6176e9d29846a278267531d1\/run\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HIP Course Designation Form<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to demonstrate how your course meets the evaluation criteria for RI designation.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Submissions will undergo review by a faculty committee, with approved course designations being implemented the following semester. Should a submission require any revisions, the faculty member will receive feedback and may submit again the same semester; courses requiring substantial revisions may choose to submit materials the following semester.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Optional: We recommend working with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/library.ucf.edu\/staff\/subject-librarians\/\">your subject librarian<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\">while preparing for designation.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"color: #000000\">Additional Steps for Course Level Designations:<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">All course-level designations must have chair approval before submission. There are 2 ways to show this:<\/span><\/p><ol><li>Submit a copy of this completed <a href=\"https:\/\/academicsuccess.ucf.edu\/our\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2021\/01\/Course-Level-Research-Intensive-Designation-MOU.docx\">Course-Level Research Intensive Designation MOU<\/a>, signed by the department chair as a supplemental document.<\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000\">OR have the department chair submit the course for review<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">For courses with multiple instructors:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000\">If everyone uses the same syllabus, then only that syllabus needs to be submitted.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000\">If the content varies, sample syllabi must be submitted with the application<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000\">More information on this can be found above in &#8220;Designation Levels: Course v.
