All that is required is a form from the mentor&#8217;s college, a very brief syllabus\/set of goals and deadlines, and some signatures.<\/p><p>Directed Independent Research credits (XXX 4912) document and formalize independent research activities for undergraduates.\u00a0UCF defines undergraduate research as an inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes (or supports the creation of) an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline.<\/p><p>This course is different from Independent Study because\u00a0students enrolled in this course are helping to contribute to scholarly discourse&#8211; by addressing problems with unknown answers or contemporary debates of interest to other scholars and professionals&#8211; rather than simply learning about a topic not offered through another course in the department.<\/p><p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Students who are University Volunteers (<a href=\"https:\/\/compliance.ucf.edu\/enterprise-risk-management\/university-volunteers\/\">learn more here<\/a>) are not eligible to receive course credit of any kind (including 0 credits) and they must donate products\u00a0 or creations to UCF, without reservation of rights (including IP).<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1992\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1992\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Why Enroll Students in 4912?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1992\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1992\"><ul><li>This course shows up on a student&#8217;s transcript: this is a very good<br \/>thing for students applying to graduate programs and professional schools.<\/li><li>Enrolling in 4912 keeps students accountable and creates a structure around the research experience.<\/li><li>This course is linked to faculty&#8217;s records. OUR collects data on enrollment in this course (and many other research programs) and can provide you a report with your mentorship activities for your tenure and promotion files and for TIP and RIA applications. <\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1993\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1993\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">How Do You Enroll Students in 4912?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1993\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1993\"><div style=\"color: black !important; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0;\">The process is different in every college, so be sure to check with your college&#8217;s\/departments&#8217; administrators and academic advisors first. Generally, though, the following steps are necessary:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Students should <b>consult with their academic advisor<\/b> to determine how many 4912 credit hours they should enroll in.\n<ul>\n<li>0 Credits: available for students with a full course load or who do not have the option to take 4912 as an upper-division elective. This option is usually no-cost for students who are enrolled in other courses during the semester when they are taking a 4912 course.<\/li>\n<li>1 \u2013 3 Credits: If students take a 4912 course for credit, it will contribute to students&#8217; GPA.
