Students completing the Major Exploration Program will
receive personalized assistance based on their specific goals and needs.
Students are provided with opportunities to participate in activities in which
they are taught how to evaluation and use the results of academic and
occupational assessments in selecting a major. With the assistance of their
assigned KMETC advisor and coach, students will develop a personal action plan to
include scheduled appointments, attending exploration fairs and workshops,
completing various self-assessments and connections with campus resources.

Initial major exploration appointments will not include
course schedule planning. A separate schedule planning appointment will be
arranged once students have identified areas of study.

For incoming UCF students, the process of exploration begins
after registering for orientation. Whether you are attending a FTIC or Transfer
Orientation, undeclared or exploring students should complete the following
self-assessments:

  • MyCareerShines – A free
    career and education planning system available to Florida students.
  • Major Confidence Survey – A free online survey
    administered through the Knights Major Exploration & Transition Center and
    Career Services. This activity allows students to explore your selected major
    further, or if you are undecided, explore possible majors that match your
    interest
  • Note-will provide hyperlink for the Major
    Confidence Survey.

Once you are on campus for orientation, students will have
the option to follow the Undeclared/Major Exploration student group. During
each of these presentations, students are introduced to the Major Exploration
Program. KMETC advisors and coaches will work to engage students in the major
exploration process by providing them with an opportunity to learn about
academic policies, available resources, and the completion of the major and
career assessments.

Step One – Schedule Your Appointment

Students should begin by scheduling a major exploration
appointment with the Knights Major Exploration and Transition Center.
Appointments can be scheduled:

  • Online using myKnight STAR
    • Note-
      will add hyperlink to myKnight STAR directing to how-to guide under resources
  • Calling the KMETC appointment line at 407/823-3165
  • Stopping by the KMET Center located in Trevor
    Colbourn Hall,133A

Step Two – Complete Self-Assessments

Students should complete the following self-assessments
prior to their first MEP appointment. If you have recently completed these
assessments, no further action is required.

  • MyCareerShines – A free

    Career Services. This activity allows students to explore your selected major

Step Three- Meet with your KMETC Advisor or Coach

  • Arrive at Trevor Colbourn Hall, 133A for your
    scheduled appointment

Building Self-Knowledge

• Take assessments to determine your values, interests, personality, and skills
o MyCareerShines – A free career and education planning system available to Florida students.
o MyPlan – A free self-assessment to help students determine their values, interests, personality and skills. Students are then matched to career possibilities based on their preferences. Create an account with the UCF license: XCDDVQAF.

• Meet with a KMETC advisor or coach to discuss your results
• Attend the Majors Fair and exploration workshops
• Get involved in student clubs and organizations

Building Educational Knowledge

• Review the Undergraduate Catalog and develop a tentative list of 2-3 majors to explore further

• Meet with KMETC advisor to discuss your major aspirations and degree requirements

• Take courses in areas of interest that also meet General Education Program (GEP) requirements

Building Decision-Making Knowledge

  • Think about how your values, interests, personality, and skills would align with the major and careers you may choose
  • Reflect on how you integrate your values into your decision-making
  • Think about what actions steps you need to take to follow through with your decision
  • Continue speaking with KMETC advisors and coaches, career counselors, faculty and mentors
