WritePlacer (In-Person)

This exam is available in-person at the University Testing Center for UCF students applying to the Advertising/Public Relations (Ad/PR) major in the Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM).

This is an invitation-only exam. Students who submit a limited-access admission application to the Ad/PR program will be notified via their UCF email if they are selected to participate in the WritePlacer exam process.

*Students can apply to the Ad/PR major a maximum of two times. After a second unsuccessful attempt, they must choose another major. Ad/PR applicants must take the WritePlacer exam each time they apply to the major.

WritePlacer is a computer placement test (CPT) that evaluates writing skills such as focus of the text, sentence structure, and organization. The purpose of the test is to measure how well a student can develop an argument, using evidence-based support as well as the appropriate mechanical conventions.

Students taking WritePlacer are presented with a prompt and asked to write an essay of 300 to 600 words. Scores on WritePlacer range from 1 to 8. NSCM students will have one (1) hour to test.

Test Dates

Semester Test Dates
Fall 2024 Friday, October 4 – Friday, October 25
Spring 2025 Wednesday, February 7 – Friday, February 28

Early registration is strongly recommended due to limited seating per test date. You must complete the registration process a minimum of 24 hours prior to your desired test date and time. Tests are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The office of Student Accessibility Services (SAS) works in collaboration with the University Testing Center (UTC) to ensure that reasonable accommodations are made for students with documented disabilities. Students with disabilities seeking accommodations for placement tests must have approval from the SAS office (407-823-2371 or sas@ucf.edu). Note: test takers should allow at least two (2) weeks for SAS and UTC to process the accommodation request once the formal request has been submitted to SAS.

You can find more details and the request form at: https://sas.sdes.ucf.edu/students/ucf-placement-tests-and-university-testing-center-accommodations/

Once UTC receives notification from the SAS office of a test-taker’s testing accommodations, a UTC staff member will create a registration account for the student and email them instructions to register. Students should NOT REGISTER for a testing appointment until they receive these instructions from UTC.

Alternate-Site Testing: (Out-of-state, Study Abroad)

Students who are not able to test in-person due to exceptional circumstances outside their control may contact UTC at utc@ucf.edu to provide documentation and request approval for WritePlacer testing at an alternate approved test site. The cost of testing at an alternate site varies, and is dependent on the pricing at that site. Alternate test sites are available in most of the continental U.S., and must be requested a minimum of 4-5 business days in advance. Students outside the U.S. during the entire test window should email utc@ucf.edu to discuss further testing options.

The in-person testing cost for the WritePlacer exam is $36.00. All costs paid to the University Testing Center are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Review UTC Policies

Review the University Testing Center’s policies prior to test day. Items such as outwear (hoodies, sweaters, jackets, pullovers, cardigans, any form of layered clothing), watches, and electronic devices are not permitted into the test room. UTC does offer lockers at no additional cost. The full list of UTC policies can be found here.
