Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE)

Please read the appropriate information about the Civic Literacy Undergraduate Degree Requirement at UCF before registering for any civic literacy test.

Consult with your academic advisor if you need additional guidance about the best option for you to satisfy the requirements.

Passing this test in high school satisfies the exam requirement.  If a student has passed this exam in high school, but it is showing as “Not Satisfied” on their degree audit, they can request an update by submitting a ticket in the UCFIT Service Now portal at ucf.service-now.com/ucfit. Click on “Request a Service” and then use the search bar to find the Civic Literacy request form.

There are currently two approved Civic Literacy Exams:

2021 Florida Civic Literacy Exam

  • The 2021 Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE) contains 80 questions and must be passed with a score of 60% or higher.
  • This is a two-hour proctored exam that can be taken in-person at the University Testing Center on the main UCF campus.
  • There is a cost of $30 per appointment.
  • This exam is not equivalent to a course and does not fulfill the course requirement for Civic Literacy, only the exam requirement.

2018 Florida Civic Literacy Test (FCLT)

  • The 2018 Civic Literacy Test option contains 100 questions and must be passed with a score of 60% or higher.
  • The 2018 test is currently still available as a non-credit course in Webcourses (Canvas).
  • There is no cost for the test.
  • Students may enroll in the Canvas course (Webcourses) to take the exam during fall, spring or summer semester.
    • Course name: Civic Literacy: U.S. History and Politics Exam

  • This option is a non-credit course; it does not fulfill a General Education Program requirement and is not equivalent to either POS2041 or AMH2020.

Note* Students may choose to take the CLEP exam for American Government to satisfy both the course (earn course credit for POS 2041) and FCLE exam requirements.

Taking the Florida Civic Literacy Exam (2021 Test)

The FCLE is available to take in-person on the UCF main campus for UCF students, and appointments are required. The FCLE will be unavailable from Friday, July 26, 2024- Monday, August 5, 2024.

The FCLE is computerized and consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test-takers will have approximately two (2) hours to complete the test.

The exam will assess competency in four (4) areas:

  • American Democracy- Understanding of the basic principles and practices of American democracy and how they are applied in our republican form of government
  • U.S. Constitution- An understanding of the United States Constitution and its application
  • Founding Documents- Knowledge of the founding documents and how they have shaped the nature and functions of our institutions of self-government
  • Landmark Impact on Law & Society- An understanding of landmark Supreme Court cases, landmark legislation, and landmark executive actions and their impact on law and society

Additional resources are available via the FLDOE Civic Literacy webpage.

The office of Student Accessibility Services (SAS) works in collaboration with the University Testing Center (UTC) to ensure that reasonable accommodations are made for test-takers with documented disabilities. Test-takers with disabilities seeking alternative testing arrangements (e.g. extended time, etc.) must request approval from SAS (407-823-2371 or sas@ucf.edu). Note: test-takers should allow at least two (2) weeks for SAS and UTC to process the accommodation requests once the formal request has been submitted to SAS.

Once UTC receives official notification from the SAS office of a test taker’s approved testing accommodations, a UTC staff member will notify the test taker via email.

Note: Test-takers seeking to test with accommodations must schedule their appointment time for Monday-Friday at 12:45 PM or earlier.

  • The cost for taking the FCLE in person is $30 per appointment.
  • All costs paid to the University Testing Center are non-refundable and non-transferable.
