Earthquake engineering is one of the disciplines within engineering that is dealing with high levels of uncertainty. To consistently account for the underlying uncertainties and make quantitative assessments of structural safety we as designers make use of probabilistic methods. The randomness in the occurrence of earthquake both in space and time, vast uncertainty in predicting intensities of resulting ground motions, and our inability to accurately access structural capacities under cyclic loading well within the inelastic range, contribute to the above. Recently, significant developments are reported in the development of machine learning, deep learning techniques and big data analytics. These techniques and tools can be used to efficiently access the structural reliability problem.
In this research work, we will use machine/deep learning techniques along with big data analytics to solve reliability structural problems of realistic large three-dimensional structures.
The undergraduate assistant will be responsible for developing machine/deep learning tools using Matlab or other available similar platforms, apply these tools to structural reliability problems data sets, post-process and present results and findings, and summarize the performed work and results in a small report.
The project would entail 8-10hrs weekly for a duration of one semester minimum and up to two semesters.
