Sensor developer for waste recycling - Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering

The student will be working on research funded by Florida’s Hinkley Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste regarding improving the quality of recyclables collected from Florida’s residences. The research aims to develop an image-based sensing tool for identifying the types of recyclables (e.g., paper, rigid plastics, low-density plastics, glasses, metals) as well as contaminations (e.g., water or food residuals) on the recyclables. The sensing tool will be able to enhance sustainable solid waste management and divert the waste from landfilling to recycling to reach the 75% recycling goal set by Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection. The student is expected to work a maximum 10 hrs/week for at least one semester. The student will be able to co-author conference or journal papers.
